(h)ear stimulates sound(art) and audio experiment. To expand this we have teamed up with the ehibition series 'Heerlen' initiated by art centre Signe in Heerlen. With this series of exhibitions art centre Signe reports the effects of the demographic and economic developments in the region. By creating snapshots and archiving the existing situation over the time the transformation of the area will be visible. Doing so the 'Heerlen' exhibitions offer more insight on the urban DNA. It will provide guidance to the memories of the local residents and policy-makers showing the consequences of their current choices.
(h)ear heeft als rode draad klank(kunst) en audio-experiment. Vanuit dit gegeven is aansluiting gezocht bij de expositieserie 'Heerlen', geïnitieerd door Kunstencentrum Signe te Heerlen. Met deze serie tentoonstellingen wil KC Signe verslag doen van de gevolgen van de demografische en economische ontwikkelingen in de regio. Door het maken van momentopnames en het archiveren van de bestaande situatie wordt in de loop van de tijd de transformatie van een gebied in beeld gebracht. De 'Heerlen' tentoonstellingen bieden zo telkens nieuwe momentopnamen van het stedelijk weefsel. Het zal houvast bieden aan de herinneringen van de buurtbewoners en zal beleidsmakers tonen wat de consequenties zijn van hun huidige keuzes.
As part of Parallel Events Manifesta 9 (h)ear will present two 'actions' in the period of June 2nd - september 30th 2012 to ensure both a visible and audible dialogue between the shrinkage problem in shopping centres and neighbourhoods, abondoned (mostly desolated) industrial areas and sound art. Therefor we choose for the expertise and artistic power of two (sound)artists: Khe Siang (NL) and Justin Bennett (UK), both residing in the Netherlands. With both artists independently we've looked for suitable locations where the focus will be on the region Parkstad in Zuid Limburg, NL.
(h)ear zal i.h.k.v. Parallel Events Manifesta 9 in de vorm van een tweetal 'momenten' in de periode 2 juni - 30 september 2012 zorgen voor zowel een zichtbaar alsook hoorbaar dialoog tussen de problematiek in krimpwijken, leeggelopen winkelcentra en verlaten (veelal desolate) industriegebieden en geluidskunst. Daarvoor is gedacht aan de inzet van de expertise en artistieke kracht van twee (geluids)kunstenaars: Khe Siang (NL) en Justin Bennett (UK), beiden residerend in Nederland. Met beide kunstenaars is onafhankelijk van elkaar gekeken naar geschikte locaties waarbij de focus zal liggen op de regio Parkstad in Zuid Limburg, NL.

Composer/sound artist Khe Siang (born in Jakarta, lives and works in Heerlen) will present his sound art performance 'Resonating Room' on friday July 20th as part of Parallel Events Manifesta 9.
'Resonating Room' is a unique experiment by sound artist Khe Siang, partly because it has not been previously done. It is a mix of sound art-performance and ritual concert, that flows into a physical experiment, namely; bringing a space into vibration, by using the resonance-frequency of that space. To achieve this Khe Siang will use his voice, primitive sound objects, live-electronics and a computer.
The performance will be followed by an exhibition with studies and documented material of the project in October 2012.
Componist / geluidskunstenaar Khe Siang (geboren in Djakarta, woont en werkt in Heerlen) zal in het kader van de kunstmanifestatie Manifesta 9 zijn geluidskunst-performance 'Resonating Room' uitvoeren.
'Resonating Room' is een uniek experiment van geluidskunstenaar Khe Siang, deels omdat het nog niet eerder is uitgevoerd. Het is een mix van geluidskunst-performance en ritueel concert, dat uitmondt in een natuurkundig experiment, namelijk; het in trilling brengen van de ruimte, door de resonantie-frequentie van die ruimte te treffen. Daarvoor gebruikt Khe Siang zijn stem, primitieve geluidsobjecten, live-electronica en een computer.
Later volgt een expositie met tekeningen en documentatiemateriaal van het project.
'Resonating Room' will take place in a small intimate living room. The tone (sound) will be played through large massive and powerful speakers. Khe Siang will be looking for the resonance frequency of the living room aiming on making the space itself vibrate. By playing the correct low tone the space will strengthen the sound creating a violently vibrating resonance frequency. The space itself will then become a tone generator. Result is a very loud, low-pitched sound, which not only can be heard but especially will be experienced physically. For a synaesthetic experience the performer and the space will be filled with dark red and blue light during the performance.
'Resonating Room' wordt uitgevoerd in een intieme woonkamer, waarbij de toon massief wordt versterkt en weergegeven door grote krachtige luidsprekerboxen. Al spelend gaat Khe Siang op zoek naar de resonantie-frequentie van de woonkamer; dat is de toon waarop de ruimte zélf gaat meetrillen. Treft Khe Siang de juiste lage toon, dan zal de ruimte die resonantie-frequentie versterken en hevig gaan meetrillen. De ruimte zélf wordt dan een toongenerator, waardoor het publiek zich letterlijk ín die toongenerator bevindt. Resultaat is een zeer luide, lage toon, die niet alleen gehoord, maar vooral gevoeld zal worden. Voor een synesthetische ervaring, wordt de performer en de ruimte met donkerrode- en donkerblauwe theaterbelichting belicht (lage tonen worden geassocieerd met de kleuren donkerrood en donkerblauw). De belichting wordt aangepast aan de gespeelde tonen.
'Resonating Room' creates an intense audio-visual and physical experience which one moment can be experienced as contemplative and the next moment as overwhelming. Goal is to observe and consciously experience the relationship between sound and space. The performance of 'Resonating Room' calls on associations with the thunder of surreal industrial sounds, the mines, vibration; aspects that will sound familiar for ex-miners experiences. It connects with the main theme 'the mines' of the art manifestation Parallel Events Manifesta 9.
'Resonating Room' creëert een intense audiovisuele- en fysieke ervaring, die het ene moment als contemplatief en het volgende moment als overweldigend ervaren kan worden. Doel is om de relatie tussen geluid en de ruimte, bewust waar te nemen en te ervaren. De uitvoering van 'Resonating Room' roept surrealistische associaties op met het gebulder van industriegeluiden, de mijnen, trillingen; aspecten die bij oud-mijnwerkers letterlijk bekend in de oren zullen klinken en die op auditieve wijze de ervaringen van vroeger kunnen oproepen. Het sluit daarmee aan bij het hoofdthema 'de mijnen' van de kunstmanifestatie Manifesta 9.
For safety reasons of the public we will distribute hearing protection. Attending the performance is at your own risk.
Voor de veiligheid van het publiek, zal er gehoorbescherming worden uitgedeeld. De performance wordt op eigen risico bijgewoond.
